The UK's cheapest SUV, the Dacia Duster, has been named as the 2012 Scottish Car of the Year, defeating 14 other opponents including the Porsche Boxster and Toyota GT86 to the prestigious award.

The budget 4x4 also won SUV of the Year and Budget Car of the Year in the Scottish awards. The £9000 off-roader will be the cheapest 4x4 available in the UK when it goes on sale next January. Judges awarded the three motoring titles to the budget car thanks to it's "huge appeal".
John Murdoch, President of the Association of Scottish Motoring Writers, said "the private buyer wants real value for money and the Duster certainly delivers on that score. Our choice may not set radical new standards in any one area, but we believe it's completely unrivalled in terms of its mix of ability, space, running costs and pricing."

Awarded the top spot in the SUV category ahead of the Mazda CX-5 and crowned the winner of the Budget award, the Duster faced competition from the winners of the other categories in the Scottish Car of the Year competition.

VW enjoyed success with the up!, which won the compact segment ahead of its sibling, the Skoda Citigo. The Porsche Boxster was the clear choice in the drop top segment and BMW's 3-Series took top spot in both the executive saloon and diesel car categories. Vauxhall's Astra VXR won the sporting class and Ampera was named the electric car winner while the Citroen DS5 HYBRID4 picked up the eco award.
