New research suggests that more than half of people in the UK do not know the drink drive limit.
A study by car insurance search engine Confused.com revealed that 51% are unaware of the legal limit when they get behind the wheel and a fifth of drivers are prepared to risk drink driving. Over 10% of people also admitted to feeling tipsy whilst driving.
The news comes even after police forces across the country are ramping up their campaigns to clamp down on boozy motorists over the festive period.
Nearly half of the 2000 respondents knew someone who has been caught drink driving and Confused calculate that motorists convicted of driving above the legal limit can expect to pay a premium on car insurance of up to 42%.
Gareth Kloet, Head of car insurance at Confused says: "My advice is to not drink at all if driving. Without taking into account the devastating toll paid in terms of injury, death, a driving ban or prison time, a drink-driving offence can cause a driver's premium to increase or prevent them from being able to obtain insurance at all. There is no fool proof way of drinking and staying under the limit.
"If you do decide to drink and drive you are risking your life as well as others. Take the safe option and either not drink or leave the car at home."
