Rare Ferrari four-seater set to make £40,000

It may look like a rusting heap destined only for the scrapyard, but this is in fact a very special Ferrari.

Set to go under the hammer at a Bonhams auction next week, this Ferrari 330GT 2+2 Berlinetta could fetch £40,000.

It's special because the 330GT 2+2 Berlinetta was the first four-seater Ferrari ever, and was created at a time when sports cars suitable for the family man became fashionable.

When restored, the car should be worth in excess of £150,000.

This car, registered "DYX 5C" was ordered by Captain F G Barker of Hannington, Wiltshire at the famous Ferrari retailer Maranello Concessionaires in July 1965.

The car was originally finished in Celeste blue with a black leather interior. Then the car went to America where it was repainted in Rosso Corsa by the next owner.

It returned to the UK in the late 1980s, after covering a genuine 57,190 miles from new, and since 2005 it has been stored. Now it's in a rather forlorn state being covered in moss and dirt.

Bonhams believes the car will appeal to Ferrari enthusiasts. Speaking to the Daily Mail, Rob Hubbard, Bonhams' senior car specialist, said: 'It was brought back from America by the owners in the late 1980s. It was put away in the garage and it was never used again.

'This will appeal to somebody who wants to put a bit of work into it. If they do it will be worth about three times as much. It is rare to find a 330GT so somebody will I'm sure want to restore the car to its former glory.

'There has been interest in this car already, with three or four telephone bidders lined up. Cars like this do not come to the market very often.'

The car goes to Bonhams' Harrogate auction on November 14.
