Tomorrow new car insurance gender rules come into force meaning some women drivers are set for a shock when their next quote lands on the doormat.
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has published seven ways to help motorists cut car insurance costs. And the best advice seems to be look around for the best quotes and do not be afraid to switch car insurance companies - here are their top tips...
Shop around
It is often useful to get quotes from different insurers, using a broker or comparison websites. Don't just buy on price, but on the policy best suited to your needs. Make sure you check the details of the cover.
Make your vehicle is secure
Premium discounts are often available when an approved alarm or immobiliser is fitted and parking the car in a garage overnight can also reduce costs.
Higher is better
Pay a higher voluntary excess, which is the first part of any claim that you pay yourself. This can mean a lower premium.
Limit the car's use
Using your vehicle in connection with any business ramps up the cost. Limit use to social, domestic and pleasure purposes if this is possible.
Pass plus
If you are a young driver, consider taking the Pass Plus course, which helps people to drive more safely. Some insurers may offer lower premiums for completing the course.
Pay in one go
Pay the premium in one go if you can afford to, as you may be charged more by paying in instalments.
Choose a lower powered car
It may sound obvious, but lower engine sizes often mean lower premiums.
