Shortlist revealed for World Car of the Year awardsJaguar Land Rover

A jury of sixty-six distinguished international automotive journalists has drawn up its list of the best cars of 2012/2013.

Featuring a selection of models from 10 different manufacturers, the shortlist ranges from the gargantuan new Land Rover Range Rover to the relatively small Peugeot 208, with a whole mix of other shapes and sizes thrown in for good measure.
C-segment hatchbacks seem to be the most prolific in the list, with the Audi A3, Mercedes A-Class, Volkswagen Golf and Volvo V40 all fighting it out to get to the prestigious gong.

Performance cars also make a few appearances - with Toyota and Subaru's joint models, the GT 86 and BRZ, sharing one place on the list, and Porsche's new Boxster also sneaking in.

Mazda should be particularly pleased with themselves, as both its new CX-5 SUV and Mazda6 D-segment hatchback make it onto the shortlist.

That leaves just the aforementioned Peugeot and Land Rover to wrap up the 10 models in for a chance of winning.

That doesn't represent the only category, however - there's also the 2013 World Performance Car of the Year, 2013 World Green Car of the Year, and 2013 World Car Design of the year.

For the World Performance car gong, the line up consists of the Aston Martin Vanquish, Audi RS5, BMW M6 and M135i, Ferrari F12 Berlinetta, Mercedes-Benz SL 63AMG and SLS AMG Roadster, Renault Clio Sport, along with the Porsche Boxster and Subaru/Toyota BRZ/GT-86 also nominated for an overall award.

For World Green Car, the list is quite a bit shorter - just five cars. Three are electric - the Renault Zoe, Smart Electric Drive and Tesla Model S - while the remaining two are both hybrid forms of the Volkswagen Jetta and Volvo V60 plug-in diesel.

Finally for World Car Design of the year, three decidedly expensive British cars are included in the list - the Aston Martin Vanquish, Jaguar F-Type and Land Rover Range Rover - followed by three not-so-expensive models - the Renault Clio, Mazda 6, and Volkswagen Golf.

The winners will be announced at the Geneva International Motor Show on Tuesday 5 March.
