Kia guns for luxury SUV sector with unveiling of Cross GT conceptKia

Kia took the wraps off its stylish Cross GT concept at the Chicago Autoshow this week and with its elegant lines and powerful stance, it looks set to take on the luxury manufacturers.

There's also a very uncharacteristic 3.8-litre V6 engine nestled under the bonnet and a an electric motor that when used in conjunction, should be good for around 400bhp of gut-busting performance.
Kia says: "The Cross GT is designed to easily accommodate four passengers and their cargo in luxurious surroundings, but the large greenhouse, airy cabin and gently sloping bonnet give the Cross GT a nimble feel that's at home in crowded urban environments."

The rear doors are "rear-hinged" so they open the opposite way (think suicide doors of the old Amercian coupes), this allows occupants to clamber in and out with ease, while making the whole experience feel that little bit special.

The cars sits on the same chassis as the previously revealed Kia GT concept, but rather than power running just the rear wheels, the Cross GT concept gets four-wheel-drive.

The Korean firm claim the concept can run for up to 20 miles on battery power alone, meaning low speed rumbles around busy cities shouldn't require much in the way of petrol, either.

Peter Schreyer, Kia Motors Corporation President and Global Chief of Design, said: "The debut of the GT in 2011 heralded a new frontier for Kia, both from a design and a business perspective. It beautifully illustrated to the world that the brand was ready to explore the possibility of perhaps one day offering a full-size rear-wheel-drive luxury saloon.

"The Cross GT, with its raised stance and large cargo area, allows us to envision the GT in the form of a full-size luxury crossover."

There is no word on an official release date but Kia seems keen to take on the highly competitive SUV market. Stay tuned for more.
