Well apparently not. As new technology coming on the market next year, could mean your next car might literally drive itself.
Let's be honest, we all get bored in traffic jams. Well, we're not alone and German electronics and engineering company Bosch has come up with an innovative solution, in the form of its traffic jam assistant.
According to a report in the The Engineer, this technology will go into full production next year and works with the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) systems already available in many cars. The traffic jam assistant has lane changing technology and keeps the car moving in stop-and-go situations, at speeds of up to 30mph.
Thankfully, drivers would still have overall control of their cars. However, with this system engaged, it would just carry on following ongoing traffic within a particular lane until switched off.
Bosch believe there's a genuine need for this technology, as according to its research, the monotony of stop/go driving can leave drivers overwhelmed and more likely to have accidents.
Looking forward, this company feel it is the first step in the direction of a fully automated car. At the moment, the command to change lanes is made by the driver, but with more development of sensors and formulas, this could be automated along with control of the maximum speed.
