Killer driver begs for jailMEN

A young motorist who knocked over and killed a mother who was out Christmas shopping pleaded at his trial to be sent to prison.

Racked with guilt after driving through a red light and hitting Helen Naylor in a retail park in Manchester city centre last December, 22-year old Callum Pearce requested to be sent to Prison, a move which was described as "unprecedented" by the trial judge.
Sentenced to 13 months imprisonment after admitting causing death by dangerous driving, Pearce waived the Judge's offer of bail until sentencing, electing instead to be sent to Strangeways prison immediately after the hearing.

Mrs Naylor was struck by Pearce's Volkswagen Polo after he failed to see the change of signals at a pedestrian crossing.

The court heard that he was not speeding at the time of the collision, but failed to stop after being distracted while talking to his girlfriend, who was also in the car.

He was confronted by another pedestrian who was almost hit and was heard to say: "I know, I know, I couldn't stop, I couldn't stop...What have I done?"

Pearce was described in court as a hard-working man who had shown genuine remorse.

His girlfriend, Daryll Donnelly was fined £2,000 and banned from driving for 12 months after pleading guilty to aiding and abetting causing death by driving whilst uninsured.
