Peugeot's menacing Pikes Peak challenger unveiledPeugeot

It is hard to believe that underneath the enormous front scoop, mammoth rear wing and Tarmac-grazing side skirts lies a Peugeot 208.

But this isn't the same little 208 that currently resides in AOL Cars' long-term test fleet but a potent racer that has been fettled by specialist engineers to tackle the world's highest hill climb.
World Rally Champion and former Citroen driver Sebastien Loeb will be the brave man piloting this demonic machine through no less than 156 corners, along 12.4 miles of dusty track to a final altitude of 4,301 metres above sea level.

Peugeot has explained some of the challenges faced when creating a successful Pikes Peak challenger: "The start line is located at an altitude of 2,800 metres, which means that competitors face an altitude difference of some 1,500 metres.

"Meanwhile, the lack of oxygen is a challenge not only for the engines - which can lose up to 30 per cent of their power - but also for the drivers who must remain fully focused on the 156 cliff-lined corners... It is an exercise that calls for dexterity and meticulous preparation, as well as a little luck."
