We made a bold prediction way back in February of this year that velvet-covered cars would be 'the next big thing' in vehicle personalisation.

Doubt started to creep in after seeing a distinct lack of tactile, furry motors on UK roads but hope was restored this week when a velvet-covered Ferrari 599 was spotted parked on London's affluent Sloane Street.
The £150,000 Italian supercar was parked up on a single yellow line and sported a velvet-feel wrap that covered the majority of the shapely bodywork.

An onlooker said: "People who have enough money to be able to afford a Ferrari shouldn't be allowed to cover it in velvet.

"It's tacky - it reminded me of the dog van from Dumb and Dumber. It just goes to show that money can't buy taste."

The left-hand-drive motor also boasted a personalised plate, only displayed on the rear, which is illegal under UK road laws.
The increasing popularity of Pimp My Ride-style car customisation has led to a rise in garages offering garish fabric wrapping, with the more eye-catching jobs costing as much as £5,000.

Just last month, a velvet-wrapped Porsche Panamera went viral on Twitter after being spotted by former Apprentice contestant James Lester parked up on the streets of London.

The velvet material is available in a range of colours - including fuchsia pink and orange - and can be applied to a range of vehicles thanks to its self-adhesive nature.

When the owner finally sees sense and wants the wrap removed, they simply take it back to a specialist who painstakingly peels it off, resorting the car to a showroom state.
