Based on the attractive RCZ coupe, the R is faster and more focused than its predecessor, with 270bhp from a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine.
That makes it the most powerful Peugeot in the marque's history, giving it a 0-62mph time of 5.9 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.
Between the front wheels, a limited-slip differential ensures traction is kept in check, while a comprehensive series of suspension revisions (including a 10mm drop in ride height) and four-pot calipers with 380mm brake discs allow the RCZ R to corner and stop as well as it accelerates.
The new range-topper is set apart by new 19" alloy wheels, matt black roof arches, a chunky rear spoiler and a unique rear diffuser.
Inside, meanwhile, a mix of leather and Alcantara make things feel suitably premium, while chrome, aluminium and red accents provide the requisite sporty touches.
Peugeot says that the new car has been designed "to meet a sports track use, but also to be durable in road-going applications."
The company is also playing up the new car's environmental credentials, with a CO2 rating of 145g/km, achieved through a combination of engine downsizing, weight loss and aerodynamic optimisation.
The RCZ R will go toe-to-toe with the Audi TT S when it goes on sale in the UK in early 2014.
The German car has 2bhp less, but will best the Peugeot in the 62mph sprint - although it's likely to cost considerably more.
