Honda's new Earth Dreams Technology (EDT) may sound like one of ZZ Top's children, but its actually a very economical engine indeed.
The idea behind the EDT engines it to be as economical as possible, much like the Mazda Skyactiv range.
EDT's first stumble into the world comes in the form of a 1.6-litre diesel engine that'll find its way into the new Civic later this year.
Honda's engineers have been fiddling, fettling and modifying the engine in many dull and complicated ways to ensure it's as economical as possible, yet still has decent performance so you don't lose anything as a result.
Honda's clearly tried hard to make the EDT 1.6 i-DTEC as eco-tastic as possible as it's set to emit only 95g/km CO2 while producing a buzzy 120bhp.
New engine aside, does this mean Honda's moving away from its hybrid system? If there's a hyper-eco diesel engine on offer, why would it need to concentrate on expensive, complicated hybrid tech? Just a thought...
