Porsche AG confirmed the legendary designer, nicknamed Butzi, passed away in Salzburg yesterday.
Matthias Mueller, CEO of Porsche AG, said in a statement: "We mourn the death of Ferdinand Alexander Porsche.
"As creator of the Porsche 911 he founded a design company in our culture that shapes our sports cars today.
"His philosophy of good design is for us a legacy that we will continue to do with honour."
Eldest son of Ferry Porsche, he designed the original 911, giving the world one of the most recognisable sportscars today. Almost 50 years on, the current sportscar still resembles the timeless 1964 model.
