New Top Gear 2012
The boys are coming back. The trio, who make Sunday nights (or weekday mornings and evenings if you've got no job and Dave on 24/7) slightly more bearable, are set to return for an 18th series.

This is a good thing because after their Indian Christmas adventure a fair few people feel as though the TG TV trio owe the license fee payer something a little better. While we wouldn't go as far as that, we'd like to see them return to form after the truly dismal Crimbo special. Looking at the trailer below, it seems like they can do it.
At a glance it looks like we'll see 'Brutus', a C63 AMG going very sideways, an aeroplane tackle the track (see above image), Nascar, more of the Stig's (very large - can Stigs breed?) family and some sort of 'challenge'. And, knowing the cast, expect lots and lots of loud opinions designed to put a few noses out of joint (and get some nice letters of complaint sent in).

Reckon this'll be another good series? Or do you think its past its best? Let us know in the comments.

Mr Loophole gets £60 fine for no MOT

Nick Freeman
Celebrity motoring Lawyer Nick Freeman, best known as 'Mr Loophole', has come unstuck in his own car.

He might have got big names such as Jeremy Clarkson and David Beckham off motoring offences, on minor technicalities, but even that couldn't stop him receiving a fine.
The 55-year-old, Cheshire-based father-of-two was driving his £200,000 Bentley Azure along the M1 when he was stopped. It was only then, that the police national computer alerted officers to his lack of an MOT on the blue car.

Freeman blamed his garage for the MOT being out of date, by saying that they hadn't sent him a reminder. This excuse didn't wash with the police and he still had to pay the £60 fine.

Proton to be sold

Proton Gen-2
Rumours of Proton's financial woes are widespread and largely accurate. The company's in trouble. The Malaysian government has decided to sell its 43% stake in the company to DRB-Hicom for a rather hefty $410million.

Last year Proton recorded a 76% drop in profits and was rumoured to be selling Lotus to make up some of its losses.
DRB-Hicom, owned by billionaire Syed Mokhtar, already hold several automotive interests. The company assembles vehicles for the likes of Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz. Of its eight assembly plants, four are for the automotive industry.

It seems that as far as sales go, DRB-Hicom is a good place for Proton (and its subsidiaries) to go. The deal will give the company another two plants and which see production of 350,000 units a year.

But what about Lotus? Is the Hethel-based firm safe? In a statement released this morning nothing has changed: "As far as we are aware, this situation changes nothing for Lotus, Proton's support in our development remains very strong and our focus, as always, is on the delivery of the business plan."

So fear not, as far as we know plans for the new Esprit are still at full chat and the company is in no danger at all. Similarly, if you want to buy a Gen2 there shouldn't a Saab-like supply problem any time soon. A result all round, then.

Young driver accidents can lead to £20million claims

Golf mk5 crash damaged
MPs were attacked yesterday in the House of Commons for not understanding just how costly young drivers' accidents can be.

Nick Starling, president of the Association of British Insurers (ABI), blasted MPs saying that they're "failing to grasp the nettle" on young drivers' accident rates (and the damage done) and that the government sees them "merely as voters".
Mr Starling informed the House of Commons Transport Committee: "Claims of up to £20million have been made. It's not unusual to have three or four people injured in a car crash who will need care for life."

He went on to say that up to 20% of young drivers have had an accident.

Road safety minister Mike Penning rebuked the accusations, commenting: "Insurers are completely wrong to suggest that this Government does not care about young people or tackling young driver accident rates, which have fallen significantly in recent years... We have made the driving test more realistic and less predictable, and are considering how to improve training for drivers after they pass their test to help them develop their driving skills and knowledge."

The Metro has reported that Direct Line settled 'such a figure' as the £20million figure Mr Starling referred to. The company added that eight-figure settlements aren't unheard of.

Insurance costs are undoubtedly rising
, especially for young drivers who have admitted to lying to reduce their premiums. The average insurance quote for a male driver aged 17-22 is around £2,977, far more than the national average of £907.

Mercedes SL advert
The official unveiling for the latest Mercedes SL might have only been just the other week at Detroit, but this hasn't stopped the new car appearing in a bizarre fashion week video.

Starring opposite David Walliam's model missus Lara Stone, the story appears to be a modern take on The Wizard of Oz.
Personally, I'm not really sure how the new Mercedes fits into this story, apart from looking good in the background.

Snow driving
We know driving in snow and ice is tricky and could be very dangerous. Even with the liberal application of winter tyres, extreme weather can beat even the most hardy of off roaders.

This video shows a handful of drivers trying to tackle one of Seattle's trickier hills during a pretty nasty snow storm. What makes it worse is the apparent presence of black ice under the snow, hence some pretty violent wheelspinning.
There're a couple of brilliant moments in there and we shan't spoil them for you, but ask yourself these two questions - which wheels are driven on a Toyota Corolla? And which wheels are they popping chains on at 1:20?

Seeing such slippery shenanigans does teach us a lesson: If it's too snowy, just leave it. Say indoors and don't try to drive. That said, we rarely get snow as bad as that...

MINI win Dakar Rally
Well, as predicted the X-raid MINI All4 team won the Dakar rally on Sunday.

After 14 hard stages Frenchmen Stéphane Peterhansel, his co-driver Jean-Paul Cottret and their green MINI All4 Racing were confirmed as the winner of the legendary Rally Dakar in a time of 38h 54m 46s.
This win was Peterhansel's tenth at the "Dakar", six on a motorcycle and now four wins in the car category.

Celebrating the win, Dr Kay Segler, Senior Vice President, MINI Brand Management and Business Coordination, said: "On behalf of MINI, I would like to congratulate Stéphane Peterhansel, his co-driver Jean-Paul Cottret and the entire X-raid team on their triumph at the 2012 Rally Dakar.

"To stand on the top step of the podium on ten occasions after the toughest rally in the world is quite simply an unbelievable achievement."

Despite the congratulations from MINI, the All4 car actually shares very little with the production Countryman. Still, the tubular-framed off-roader was at least sculpted by the MINI design team and powered by a BMW Motorsport-supplied diesel engine.

As the famous song goes, 'Oh Lord won't you buy me a Mercedes-Benz, my friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends...'
So, we were surprised to see that the iconic Joplin, had in fact been allured by the timeless lines of Porkers and purchased this three year-old Porsche 356C Cabriolet in 1968.

The original pearl grey paint was soon gone once her close friend and poster artist Dave Richards added his touch to the car.

Apparently, he used good-old fashioned regular house paint and the design reflects psychedelic drug scenes and graphics from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The result is just as impressive as John Lennon's Rolls-Royce and the car remains a fantastic snippet of the singer's life for fans to appreciate.

Cubed Porsche
First there was the Ferrari table, then the Porsche media centre and now I've found evidence of how another 911 has met its end with a crusher in the name of art.

What is more disappointing in this video from 2006, is that despite looking a bit tatty, this 997-generation Porsche looks to be in useable condition.
I'd advise Porsche fans to look away now, but I was impressed with the pictures from the interior and have no idea how they retrieved the camera from the tangled mess.

Michelin has shifted 500,000 winter tyres

Mercedes C-Class estate
The last two winters the UK's faced have been pretty vile. Lots of rain, wind and country-halting snow. Not good if, like the vast majority of drivers, your car is shod with soft, summer-friendly tyres. The slightest hint of the slippery stuff would see cars skidding, sliding and, sadly, crashing.

Because of the snotty weather we've seen more and more people take up winter tyres. They're designed to be more grippy in wet, snowy and nasty winter conditions in temperatures lower than seven degrees centigrade. So... the British autumn, winter and spring.
Anyway, Michelin is reporting that it sold 500,000 winter tyres by the end of December last year - that's twice the amount shifted in 2010 and four times as many sold in 2009.

They're not a cheap investment, so the numbers are rather surprising. The fact that your winter boots will last you a few winters may have been an incentive to buy, or maybe the snow chaos that's ground the country to a halt for the last few years spurred people on. Still, it's good to see more drivers prepared to properly equip themselves this year.

Prada summer collection shoes
Now, high heels aren't what we usually cover here at Autoblog, but Prada's latest effort is pretty spectacular.

The brand's summer collection is 1950s inspired and the shoes are rather... distinctive.
As you'd expect from such a prestigious fashion house they're rather ostentatious and, well, will certainly make sure you stand out. Essentially you'll be wearing some shoes with the back end of a 50s Cadillac on the heel. There are worse places to pop some Caddy tweaks, no?

They're the shoes that every male petrolhead has been waiting to buy his long-suffering other half.

"Darling, I have a surprise for you."
"Yes, really? What is it?"
"Some shoes..."
[Paper tearing sounds]
"PRADA! Darling, thank you!"
[Sound of box opening and a smile steadily falling]
"I thought you'd like something that we could both appreciate..."
"Why, you shouldn't have. You really, really shouldn't have."
"But..."
"I'm going to stay with my sister for a while."
"Oh."

It probably won't go like that, because the Prada shoes are, frankly, incredible. We're waiting for high street outlets to bring on their own versions because a pair is likely to set you back $1,450 (£938.94 by today's exchange rates). Though let's hope they don't go for 90s designs...

All hail what will probably be the most important new car of 2012, the latest BMW 3-Series and we are just weeks into the new year.

So why is it so important you might ask? Well popularity with the fleet and family sector is key and judging from the performance of the old car, BMW will have another winner.
Munich has perhaps played it safe with the sixth-generation junior executive's styling, but the fact that the new car is longer, wider yet 50kg lighter is impressive.

Other 3-Series highlights include a vast choice of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines.

UK first drives are next month, but see more of the new BMW in the video below:

Mercedes 190 rap video
Now we here at Autoblog can understand Prince being influenced by American sports cars in the single "little red Corvette" and The Who singing about the iconic British sports car brand in their 1967 track "Jaguar".

But a rap song inspired by an iconic if slightly dull 80's Mercedes saloon is a surprise.
Well, that's exactly what Norwegian rappers Jan Emil Wathne and Ivar Kjetland have laid down for the Mercedes 190.

"The mighty 190" as the track is called, is basically a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the three-pointed star's tough, reliable and soon to be classic, small 80s saloon. It was replaced by the first C-Class in 1993.

The lyrics are naughty but amusing, so it is not strictly safe for work, but see what you think as the video is below:

Polish car crash
This CCTV footage shows the moment a Polish driver and his passengers career into a lamp post ending in one of the worst crashes we've seen.
The vehicle, a Skoda Favorit, clips the pole and flips round, actually causing the car to rip in half. The car then travels another 30 yards up the road before hitting a tree.

Just seconds later the trio appear unscathed from the wreckage and start walking way from the scene. How they managed to survive is one of life's mysteries, but thankfully it looks like nobody was badly injured. The state of car, however, is a different story and this is one scenario where even T-Cut probably won't work.

The Caterham Group, comprising of the Caterham F1 Team, the GP2 team Caterham Racing and Caterham Cars have announced plans to relocate from their current site in Norfolk to a new home in Leafield, Oxfordshire, in August 2012.

Team Principal Tony Fernandes believes that the move will help both teams continue to establish themselves as serious contenders for long-term honours in the FIA Formula One World Championship and the GP2 support series.
Mr Fernandes explained: "The factory in Hingham has been our home since we were first granted our entry into the F1 World Championship in September 2009 and it has served us extremely well, giving us the perfect platform to establish both the F1 team and our GP2 team in the first stages of our development.

"We propose moving the F1 and GP2 teams to the new site in or around August 2012, giving us ample time to build up the infrastructure required to house all the critical elements of both teams, and propose moving Caterham Cars into a new, bespoke development and production facility on the same site in due course. Audi A7 long term report: You raise me up, so I can...look like an idiot

Filed under:

An interesting thing has emerged, literally, during our time with the A7.

It's the retractable spoiler. When it's up, the back of the car looks like this...
And when it's not up...

...Hmm. Don't have a picture of the back of the car without the spoiler lifted. Spoiler is always up.

The way I see it, spoilers are awesome in all most forms, so when a car has a spoiler button, to not press it immediately after getting into the car is the same as not hitting 'collect winnings' immediately after seeing jackpot signs on a fruit machine. WIN!

But some people have taken issue with this. The A7's spoiler lifts automatically when the car hits 80mph, and it goes back down again below 50mph. So, 80- to 50mph is a specific speed window approved by Germany, in which the spoiler will best improve aerodynamic efficiency.

Outside that chunk of velocity, the spoiler, presumably, hinders efficiency rather than aids it.

But worse than that, with the spoiler lifted at non-German-approved speeds, the A7 "looks ridiculous," according to a friend of mine. Yikes.

But if this one exact circumstance is the only time the spoiler should be up, why put the button there? This button:

Imagine the following conversation:

"Check out my new Audi. It's amazing. It has...spoiler."

"Well where is it?"

"It's hidden."

"Can I see it?"

"Obviously not. Germany says that it should only be lifted from 80mph or something, to do with aerodynamic efficiency and that."

"What does that button do over there?"

"Lifts the spoiler."

"Can I touch it?"

"No."

"Why?"

"Because a spoiler is not a fashion accessory."

"Then why put the button there?"

"..."

"Well..."

"Get out of my Audi."

So that concludes the debate. If a car has a spoiler button, you have to press it...or do you?

Imagine you were a man (if you're not already a man), and were the owner of a boy band specification six pack. Many grueling hours you've spent sat on that machine in the gym, making toilet noises. And now, finally, you've rid yourself of the wobbling mound that your moobs used to rest on top of.

That's good. Healthy. Your gut is strong. But would you then walk around wearing a crop top or constantly using one hand to hoist up your t-shirt as you were walking around?

No, you wouldn't. It'd be enough for you to know that you've got the goods, and that you could call on them whenever they were legitimately needed: you're invited to an impromptu sit-up competition, for example, or someone specifically asks to touch them.

Constantly getting your six pack out, to make yourself feel all superior to the fatties, would clearly make you a complete and utter...

...Oh no. Time to tape over that spoiler button.

Aston Martin promotional video
When you think Aston Martin you think of James Bond (not James Martin) cruising to the Riviera with a stunning, intelligent female Russian spy in the passenger seat looking longingly at him, as a tramp would a plate of chips. But Aston doesn't want you to think that.

Aston Martin wants to you to know that it's not just a man-brand. It's for women too. To hammer this point home the firm's released a new advert especially for girls.
The ad shows an initially unidentified driver threading a Virage through narrow passageways, zooming down the motorway and generally looking the dogs on the roads. You'll also notice the women paying attention to the car, as a petrolheaded chap would in the street. Though maybe with less pavlovian salivation rolling to their shoes.

The ad itself is beautifully shot, showing the car off in its best light and wonderfully showing the drama such a machine can bring to the roads.

Though we're a little torn as to why such an ad exists. Yes, car ads tend to be heavily focussed towards men (unless it's a small French hatchback: 'Nicole..?') though men tend to care more about their wheels than women (before the PC brigade go nuts: that doesn't mean there are no female petrolheads, no one's so stupid as to think so) and therefore cynical advertising types tend to mercilessly target them as a Terminator would Sarah Connor.

But why create an ad specifically saying: "We love women"? Imagine if Aston made an ad stating "We love men". The ill-educated mocking would be endless, then they'd get it in the neck from the PC peeps.

Thankfully, it's a brilliant ad, so none of that should matter anyway. Enjoy.
