New Bugatti Veyron world record car expectedWorldcarfans

Supercar maker Bugatti is tipped to unveil a new world record-breaking car at this month's Shanghai motor show.

Having recently been stripped of its record for the world's fastest production car by the American Hennessey Venom GT, the French marque is aiming for another crack at the record books.
Leaked images show the car, called the Bugatti Grand Sport Vitesse World Record Convertible, finished in the same orange and black as the company's previous record breaking car, the Veyron Supersports.

Based on the open-top Bugatti Grand Sport Vitesse, the new world record car hit 254.069mph on the five-mile straight at Volkswagen's Ehra-Lessien test facility, making it the world's fastest convertible.

The run is reported to have been conducted by a Chinese test driver, giving weight to speculation that the car will be unveiled at the Shanghai motor show.

This is not the first time Bugatti has had to revise the Veyron to keep it in the record books. When the original Veyron was beaten by the SSC Ultimate Aero SSC (which managed 256.18mph on a closed section of Nevada highway), it responded with the Veyron Supersports, which boasted extra power and tweaked aerodynamics to reclaim the record at 267.86mph.

As customer Veyron Supersports are limited to 258mph for tyre safety reasons, Hennessey was successful in arguing that the Veyron was not the fastest production car, despite the Venom GT only managing a maximum of 265.7mph.

Driver prosecuted for overtaking four cars at oncePress Association

A BMW driver has been found guilty of driving without due care and attention after overtaking four vehicles at once, including a police car.

61-year-old Kenneth McKay was arrested after officers took down his registration number and later visited him at his home.
McKay, of South Shields, initially pleaded not guilty though soon returned to court to admit the offence rather than stand trial.

Justin Gibson, prosecuting, told the court: "It was 5.10pm when he was first seen on Newcastle Road heading towards Cleadon from Sunderland.

"Officers noticed a car behind driving in excess of the 40mph limit and overtaking several vehicles in one manoeuvre.

"The defendant's car was right behind the one in front and he was straddling both lanes of traffic.

"At Cleadon Village, the car overtook about four vehicles, including the police car, while driving on the other side of the road beyond a bollard separating the lanes."

In mitigation, McKay's legal representative said: "He overtook a number of cars at speed. It was inappropriate, but there was never anything close to a collision.

"No one had to take evasive action to get out of his way - this is careless, not dangerous, driving."

McKay was given six penalty points, fined £240 and ordered to pay £124 in costs and victim surcharges by magistrates.

Project Peugeot: We embark on refurbishing classic 205 GTI 1.9James Baggott

I'm of that age. My hairs are greying, my taste in radio stations is changing and my appetite for Fosters has been replaced with a fondness for red wine. Yes, I'm getting middle aged.

But with those cons come some pros too - and an important one is a distinct appreciation of cars of a certain age. But they aren't Porsches and Ferraris that I hanker for, no these are more run-of-the-mill motors, the sort you'd see thousands of on the roads in the early to late nineties.
It doesn't matter what age you are, there are always cars you coveted in your teens that when you hit your 30s you really must own. For me it's all about 80s hot hatches. From Ford XR2s (one of which I already own) to Golf GTI MKI and MKIIs, and from Renault 5 GT Turbos to Fiat Uno Turbos - if I saw them speeding down the High Street in my youth, you can guarantee that I want one now.

However, the car I really, really wanted to get behind the wheel of was always the Peugeot 205 GTI. I fancied the 1.6-litre version first and even weighed up the insurance costs (£3,500 for third party) at the tender age of 18. But for most fans, the 1.9 GTI was the one to go for - the larger alloy wheels, the bigger engine - it was enough to make most grown men weak at the knees.

Now, more than a decade later, it's little different. So, when I got a phone call from my equally hot hatch obsessed mechanic mate Matt offering me the car you see here, I knew my wallet would soon be lighter.

Meet J39 JMR - the new AOL Cars Project Peugeot. The plan is a simple one: get the old girl back into fine fettle and document the process - hopefully inspiring a few readers to do the same in the process. I don't know about you, but I've always wanted a project car, I've just never had the time or knowledge to get it off the ground.

Now, with the help of some good industry contacts, AOL Cars plans to show you how to tackle a project of your own.

So, what's J39 JMR like? Well, she's actually in pretty good nick. Mechanic Matt, of White's Motors in Portsmouth, bought two other 205 GTIs at the same time as this one and let us have the nicer one of the three. He paid £1,000 so we added a £200 finder's fee on top and snapped her up.

She hasn't got an MOT or tax - but Matt doesn't think the former will be any hassle. He's already stripped the brakes down and cleaned them up, and there's no sign of corrosion under the body. And he's sure a service will be all she needs mechanically.

Those classic alloy wheels, though, are in need of some TLC and unfortunately the paintwork is beyond salvageable in places. The plan is to get the alloys refurbished and find a good body shop that can re-spray her.

As it's a late example, J39 JMR has got power steering - something some purists won't like - but it is pre-cat, which was something that really did ruin these little hot hatches. The interior is lovely, it's got electric windows and sunroof, and the original stereo is still in place, so there are lots of positives.

So the plan? Well, first up is that all-important MOT. Then we'll start the process of sprucing her up. We'll be posting regular updates about her progress here, but in the meantime we'd love to hear your stories about your favourite eighties and nineties hot hatches - tell us about them in the comments section below.

First drive: Audi RS6 AvantAudi

Bored of naysayers complaining that Audi's latest V8 engine isn't as potent or fiery as the previous V10 it replaces, the German firm has attempted to silence doubters by unveiling the fastest accelerating estate car on the market. Step forward the insane Audi RS6 Avant.

What is it?

It's every family man's fantasy, a 4-litre twin turbo V8 engine that produces a monstrous 552bhp all wrapped up in the exterior of a sensible estate car that can happily swallow 1,680 litres worth of luggage. The dog can get in the back, the wife won't sense anything is out of place (until she sees the fuel bills) and Mr Mid-life crisis gets to drag race Lamborghinis at the traffic lights. The concept may be difficult to fathom but demand for molten hot estate cars remains relatively strong, with Audi shifting around 700 of the outgoing model (saloon included) in the UK with relative ease over the last two years.
What's under the bonnet?

An all-new 4-litre twin turbo TFSI engine with cylinder-on-demand (COD) technology replaces the 5-litre V10 of old. Despite dropping a couple of cylinders (and even running on just four at cruising speeds thanks to fuel saving cylinder-on-demand technology) and 18-odd horses, the new power plant manages to propel the RS6 to 62mph from a standstill in just 3.9 seconds, beating the old unit by 0.7 seconds. It also reduces fuel consumption by a staggering 47% and drastically reduces emissions. The one thing it does lack is that glorious V10 soundtrack but some clever exhaust pipes and trick valves in the latest model ensure occupants and passers-by enjoy the impressive aural fireworks.

What's the spec like?

This is a £76,985 Audi so it's going to feel pretty special inside but the RS6 Avant really does pack the sort of technology you'd expect on a halo model. Honeycomb-quilted seats, the flat-bottomed RS steering wheel and twin oval RS tailpipes help ram home the sporting intentions but then the excellent BOSE sound system, MMI Navigation and driver information system are all added tech bonuses that come as standard. The interior is, in Audi's own words, "black sporty" but potential punters should read "dark". Almost everything is black plastic, which can dampen the sense of occasion somewhat and lends itself to being a bit gloomy rather than sporty.

%VIRTUAL-Gallery-185192%

Any rivals?

The Germans are pretty adept at producing ridiculously quick estate cars, with Mercedes offering the almost-as-bonkers E63 AMG estate at £75,510. It's slightly cheaper, produces near enough the same power and some will find the cabin airier and less oppressive. The BMW M5 saloon is just as potent but doesn't boast the same copious load area, while the Jaguar XFR-S saloon will do a good job of transporting passengers at 186mph. Those on a much tighter budget should look towards the BMW 330d Tourer, a competent machine that packs a luggage-lugging punch with a decent and much more discreet driving experience.

What's it like to drive?

The sheer size of the RS6 Avant makes attacking tight country roads a bit of a handful and the more enthusiastic drivers out there will find themselves on the brakes more than they are on the accelerator. The V8 produces so much punch it becomes difficult to put it down on normal roads, despite the best efforts of the four-wheel-drive Quattro system, but get this thing on an open Autobahn and it sings. An intensely illegal 155mph is dispatched in a blink of an eye yet the car feels so planted and safe, you want to push it that bit more. As a rapid missile that's capable of transporting a plethora of goods and people, the RS6 is phenomenal, but driving it anywhere near its limit requires some serious cojones and unless you want smashed shopping, mangled children and a divorce, it's probably best avoided when fully-laden with the aforementioned items.

The AOL Cars verdict

The Daily Mail questioned the need for such a rapid estate when details of the RS6 Avant were first unveiled, and they have a point, it is difficult to see anyone in the UK actually testing the 189mph top speed. But this isn't a machine for the masses, it is for those who want a truly luxurious, fire-breathing motor that pops and bangs yet can happily double up as an everyday family cruiser. In that respect, the RS6 Avant is pretty much faultless.

Range Rover owner Ali Hassan Gharib must have a spare few quid - either that or he has stumbled upon the largest back-of-sofa coin horde in history - as he has managed to completely cover his luxury off-roader in shiny dirhams.

The blinged-up SUV is bedecked with a total of 57,412 dirhams, or the equivalent of around £11,000, sending the price tag for this ultimate show of wealth soaring to around £500,000, according to The Sun newspaper.
Despite sporting nearly half a ton of spare change, the plucky Range Rover can still hit a top speed of 75mph, though there is no guarantee that the shrapnel won't fly off when the pedal is depressed firmly to the metal.

The dazzling Range is the work of Dubai-based car tuners Coins Car, who specialise in covering vehicles in precious metal. An artist is said to have spent weeks polishing each coin and then gluing them individually by hand.

In an attempt to avoid attention from light-fingered thieves, the dirhams used in the project are said to be out of circulation, so relatively worthless unless smelted down.

This isn't the first car to be covered in an odd material in order to grab attention; Bugatti unveiled a Veyron festooned with porcelain, a Swarovski crystal-studded Cadillac CTS coupe was unveiled at the Qingdao International Auto Show in China two years ago and Leeds United player El Hadji Diouf famously turned up for training in a chromed Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren.

Video: Fernando Alonso tests the LaFerrariYouTube

Two-time Formula 1 World Champion Fernando Alonso is used to tackling tracks at a blistering pace but he still manages to grin like a child in a sweet shop behind the wheel of Maranello's latest hypercar.

The LaFerrari boasts a 6.3-litre V12 engine combined with an electric motor to produce a maximum power figure of a whopping 963bhp. The 0-62mph sprint time is said to be under three seconds and the top speed is in excess of 217mph.
Those figures are heading towards Formula 1 territory so it's no surprise the Spanish driver looks suitably impressed while piloting the LaFerrari around the Italian manufacturer's famous Fiorano circuit in Maranello.

Alonso said after his test drive: "I am always happy to spend a few days in Maranello.

"Apart from working on the car and being in close contact with the team, sometimes I'm able to see some of the production departments which are the heart of the company.

"This time I met up with people who are never in the limelight, but they have an incredible love for their work."

Check out the video below and witness Alonso's reaction to a very special car he personally helped fine tune.

Maserati unveils BMW 5-series rivalling GhibliMaserati

The curvaceous Italian beauty stood before your very eyes is the latest four-door saloon from Maserati.

The Ghibli - named after the company's popular Gran Turismo car of the early 1970s - will be powered by a 3-litre V6 diesel engine for the first time in the Italian company's history.
Full details surrounding performance figures and economy are yet to be revealed, presumably because Maserati is saving those for the official unveiling at the Shanghai motor show on April 20.

We do know customers will be offered a choice of two turbocharged 3-litre V6 petrol engines (offered in around 410bhp and 330bhp, respectively) and the aforementioned diesel - with both likely to be mated to the new eight-speed automatic ZF gearbox that can be found in the latest Quattroporte.

The Ghibli runs a rear-wheel drive configuration, with Maserati's "Q4" four-wheel drive system offered in selected markets.

Maserati says: "It is our first saloon in this segment and reflects the company's belief that a growing number of premium executive car buyers are looking to make an individual statement through a car that is distinctive, elegant and luxurious."

The Ghibli is said to have a "sportier character" compared to the larger Quattroporte that it shares many of its basic underpinnings with - mainly thanks to a shortening of the chassis and an overall weight reduction - but it is also rumoured to cost around £50,000... by far the cheapest Maserati in the current line-up.

Above all else, its success will play an essential role in Maserati's ambitious growth plan to sell 50,000 cars per year by 2015.

Man jailed for running over policemenGreater Manchester Police

A Manchester motorist has been jailed for ten years after running down two policemen who had pulled him over for a routine stop.

Wayne Crompton was stopped after being observed driving on the wrong side of the road in the Whitefield area on February 24.
Already disqualified from driving, Crompton attempted to make his escape by reversing into one officer, and then mowing down the second who had stepped in front of his car.

A full description from Greater Manchester Police said the officers pulled the car over and one of the officers got out and began to approach the driver's door.

Crompton then put the car into reverse and deliberately hit the officer, knocking him to the ground unconscious.

The second officer then got out of the police vehicle and went to the front of Crompton's car. Crompton drove off, launching the officer over the bonnet of the car before speeding off down Rochdale Road.

Both policemen suffered significant injuries, with one being treated for a broken arm and the other for a fractured skull.

Crompton admitted assault and dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and driving with no insurance.

He was also convicted of aggravated vehicle taking without consent after the red Hyundai used in the attack was found to be registered to a friend.

Crompton will have to serve six and a half years before being eligible for parole.

It is reported that Crompton attacked the officers due to already having been banned from driving and being previously convicted of driving while disqualified in December last year.

Ford Focus is world's favourite carFord

So common they blend into the background like pylons, the Ford Focus isn't just popular in Britain.

The mid-sized family hatchback has just been named the best selling car in the world, according to figures released by a US automotive research company.
Ford managed to shift 1.02 million of them globally in 2012, comprehensively outselling its nearest rival, the Toyota Corolla, which has traditionally dominated global sales rankings.

Ford's success is largely down to its 'One Ford' policy, in which a single model is designed to cater to the tastes of customers in markets across the globe.

The Ford Fiesta, a similarly 'global' car, took sixth place in the world sales charts, outselling the perennially popular Volkswagen Golf. The German hatchback may claw its way back up the rankings soon, however, as it is about to go on sale in the States.

Ford has enjoyed further high sales globally with the F-Series pickup truck, which sold 785,000 units. This makes it the third most popular model line in the world, despite only really appealing to the North American market.

There has been some contention over the figures, with Toyota claiming it sold more Corollas in 2012 than Ford did Focuses. But as the Corolla model is marketed with different names in different markets, it technically isn't the same model, meaning Ford took the honours.

Expect to see Chinese brands shake up the market in years to come. The largely unheard of Wuling Zhinguang is already the fourth best selling car in the world, despite only being sold in mainland China.

Japanese carmakers recall 3.4 million cars over airbag defectToyota

Honda, Toyota, Nissan and Mazda are recalling 3.4 million cars globally over a defective part which could "cause the airbag inflator to rupture and deploy the airbag abnormally in a crash".

Toyota is recalling the most models in the UK, with 76,000 cars due to head back to the dealers for a thorough once over. Nissan says almost 60,000 UK models were involved, Honda will recall 14,475 cars and Mazda just 1,913.
All manufacturers have cited a faulty component supplied by Takata as the main cause of the recall with most affected cars manufactured between 2000 and 2004.

A Toyota spokesperson said: "We have informed VOSA who will soon release the addresses of those affected to us so we can write to them.

"We will then ask customers to visit their local dealers where the part will be replaced for free in around an hour to two and half hours, depending on the model.

"Customers who wish to find out more can log on to our website Toyota.co.uk, enter their registration or VIN number and it will automatically inform them if their vehicle is affected."

Honda says the majority of vehicles affected are CR-Vs built at the Swindon plant between 2002-2003. A small number of Jazz and Stream variants built between 2001-2002 are also included in the recall.

A Honda spokesperson said: "Naturally, we are in contact with the DVLA to ensure we can contact all registered owners of those vehicles affected."

This is the third recall Toyota has experienced in the past 12 months, with two major recalls occurring at the tail end of last year.

A Toyota spokesperson said: "We are getting better at these and customers like the fact the we are proactive, contact them and fix their car free of charge to ensure it is as safe as it can possibly be."

A list of affected UK models can be found below (between 2000-2004 unless stated):

Honda

Five million motorists driving with damaged brakes

Five million motorists driving with damaged brakesPA

New research by Kwik Fit shows that over five million motorists admit to having some kind of brake damage.

More worrying still, a third of motorists with defective brakes, some 1.7 million drivers, have known about the problem for at least a month, without getting it repaired.
Our female readers won't be surprised that 24% of male motorists with a brake problem admitted to knowing about it for at least three months - compared to just 7% of women.

The study also revealed that nearly one in five (18%) motorists have been in a car accident caused by braking errors.

Above all else, the sheer number of respondents that are living with on-going brake problems is staggering.

Nearly 1.5 million people are experiencing a squealing noise from their brakes, 1.18 million can feel their car pulling to one side under braking and half a million are driving with a brake warning light on.

Roger Griggs, communications director at Kwik Fit, says: "This research reveals that many of us have been in an accident where braking has been a cause, and yet far too many motorists admit they are driving around with defective brakes.

"A grinding noise could be a result of pads which are worn and need replacing, pulling to one side could be a component sticking, and a spongy pedal could be due to air in the hydraulic system.

"It is vital that drivers are able to stop their car as quickly as possible in an emergency, and anyone suffering these symptoms may have their safety compromised as a result. We would urge anyone experiencing these warning signs to get their brake system checked as soon as possible."

Male drivers more likely to drive recklessly on rural roadsPA

A new survey has revealed that male drivers are more likely to risk lives by overtaking blind and speeding on rural roads.

The results uncovered by road safety charity Brake and insurers Direct Line reveal a staggering one in four men risk a head-on collision by overtaking unsighted while more than four in 10 admit speeding at 60mph+ on rural roads.
Males are more likely to take adverse risks on the road and are more than twice as likely than the fairer sex to have been involved in a near-miss or accident.

Furthermore, over half of the women questioned have been afraid when travelling as a passenger when their driver has overtaken another vehicle in the past year, compared to just 44% of men.

The findings are even more pertinent when you consider six in ten UK roads deaths were on rural roads in 2011 - the most recent statistics available.

Broken down, that equates to around 1,197 people violently and tragically losing their lives on country roads each year.

Ellen Booth, senior campaigns officer at Brake, the road safety charity, said: "Overtaking dangerously or driving too fast on rural roads puts yourself and others in grave danger, risking needless deaths and injuries.

"Some people kid themselves they can get away with excessive speeds and dangerous manoeuvres, because they know the road. Yet driving on rural roads is highly unpredictable, and the consequences of risk-taking often horrendous."

Simon Henrick, spokesperson at Direct Line Car Insurance, added: "More than three people die on rural roads in the UK each and every day and many of these deaths could be prevented.

"Our own data suggests that young drivers and their passengers are even more likely to die on this type of road. Drivers should remember that patience is a virtue when it comes to deciding to overtake another vehicle, as it could be a life saver."

Couple jailed for massive car insurance fraudSWNS

Elina Jaksone and Gagik Manucharyan have been jailed for five years after setting up a "ghost" brokerage firm that saw customers conned into parting with cash in exchange for cheap car insurance.

Hundreds of motorists paid £100 each in commission to the couple, which resulted in a profit of around £920,000 that was used to put one of their children through public school.
Unknown to their customers the fraudulent pair then posed as the drivers and lied to underwriters about their details and records, in order to secure cheaper policies.

The seven-year scheme risked invalidating the policies held by their clients - mostly Eastern Europeans - leaving them without any cover.

Profits were spent on fees at one of Britain's most prestigious schools - which can't be named for legal reasons - and a £365,000 detached house.

They also indulged in five star holidays in Jamaica, Mauritius, Mexico and Tokyo and each drove Mercedes vehicles - one costing £56,000.

The pair also failed to pay any tax, which would have amounted to £340,000.

They were jailed following an investigation led by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

Jaksone and Manucharyan were charged with insurance and benefit fraud and convicted after a seven-week trial at Maidstone Crown Court.

Jaksone admitted fraudulently claiming £82,000 in tax credits and pension credits by posing as a single mother with high childcare costs.

She used her mother's details to claim pension credits and the winter fuel allowance.

The couple asked to be spared a jail sentence at the hearing, citing they would miss their children. But according to The Telegraph, Judge James O'Mahoney said: "That misery of being kept away from your children, is of your own making.

"You had plenty of time to have thought about what you were doing and the implications."

More than 30 drivers gave evidence at the trial, describing how they thought the insurance deals were legitimate.

The pair now face a financial investigation to recover some of the proceeds of the fraud. Their house in Westgate-on-Sea, Kent has been restrained.

Out of Irish luck: Dublin driver clamped 63 times in four yearsDave Thompson/PA

A four-year analysis of registration numbers in Dublin has unearthed the capital's most persistent parking offender.

The driver - whose name has not been revealed - has been clamped an astonishing 63 times over the past four years, clocking up around €5,000 (or £4,300) in clamping fees.
Dublin's parking appeals officer Bill Keilthy believes the deterrent value of a clamping release fee has somewhat diminished over the years as the €80 penalty hasn't changed since its introduction in 1998.

Mr Keilthy believes his analysis of the frequency with which cars were clamped in the last four years shows that almost 30 per cent had been clamped more than once.

Almost 400 cars in Dublin were clamped more than 10 times. Four cars were clamped an average of once a month, while the "most persistent offender" was clamped 63 times.

In his annual report to Dublin City Council Mr Keilthy said clamp-release charges should be increased by more than 60 per cent to €130 to cover the actual cost of the service, and to preserve the deterrent effect.

The service costs the council about €7 million a year, which could be fully recovered only if the charge was increased to €130, he said. Otherwise it would continue to be subsidised from the meter fees paid by compliant parkers.

Research has revealed that UK motorists were slapped with a £1.3 billion parking penalty bill in 2012, do you think the fees are fair or should they be increased?

Dubai isn't shy of a few hot supercars, the city has one of the highest concentrations of exotic motors in the world.

So potent is the machinery on offer, the Dubai police force has decided to add a £360,000 Lamborghini Aventador to its fleet of crime busting cop cars.
The two-door, two-seater supercar can manage a top speed of 217mph and hit 62mph from a standstill in an eye-watering 2.9 seconds.

Despite being decked out in full Dubai police livery and sporting a rather fetching set of lights, the car is unlikely to engage in any high speed pursuits as it has been introduced purely as a marketing exercise.

The attention-grabbing car will be dispatched to busy tourist areas to show "how classy Dubai is". Those aren't our words, they are those of Dubai's deputy police director Gen Khamis Matter al-Muzaina.

According to The Telegraph, local media reports said the Italian-made Lamborghini Aventador is the crown jewel of a wider upgrade in Dubai police wheels.

The force is also adding some American muscle to its fleet with a considerably less expensive Chevy Camaro.

Honda creates special potholed road to mimic UK driving conditionsPA

It's a sorry state of affairs when Honda has to create a special, pothole-ridden road surface in order to test models destined for the UK.

Alas, the state of our roads has become such an issue manufacturers are forced to come up with ways of testing and producing cars that can cope with our mottled road surfaces and meet UK customers' high ride-quality expectations.
Engineers at Honda have had trouble replicating British driving conditions on the super-smooth highways of Japan so have resorted to creating a crumbling, battle-scarred surface in which to stress test upcoming models.

The four-mile track, based at the firm's test centre in Hokkaido, is made from the more absorbent tarmac used in the UK. Its porous surface cracks easily and replicates the rutted roads British drivers endure on a daily basis.

It can also be temperature controlled to create the sub-zero conditions of our winters. For added realism, the test track also includes UK-style roundabouts and road signs.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, a Honda spokesman said: "The road surfaces in continental Europe, especially in the North, are paved with hard material that does not absorb water.

"This is because, in severe winter, absorbed water in the material may freeze, turn into ice and destroy the roads.

"England doesn't tend to suffer with this severe winter, and so the surface is made with softer materials with many pores to absorb rain to prevent a slippery surface.

"As a result, UK roads have a rougher surface, which creates more road noise than other European roads."

The 'Swiss cheese' road surfaces appear to be here to stay, with many councils opting to pay compensation to pothole-damaged car owners rather than tackle the problem head-on.

Thug flips ex-girlfriend's caravan with tractorSWNS

A jilted lover has been jailed after he deliberately crashed a tractor into his ex-girlfriend's caravan, flipping it while she slept inside.

Alexander Brown then continued his late-night harassment as he slashed the tyres of petrified Carolyn Picton's car while she scrambled to safety with her pet Fox Terrier Astor via the window of the mobile home.
She was left dazed and disorientated by her ordeal but managed to escape without suffering serious injury.

Brown fled as the holiday caravan park owner rushed to the scene to help. Brown was arrested 12 hours later when he was found hiding in a field near the scene at Beacon Cottage Farm Touring Park in St. Agnes, Cornwall.

Ms Picton, 56, told a court: "I heard the roar of the engine then the caravan was thrown through the air.

"A microwave just missed me. I could have been killed."

Truro Crown Court also heard how Ms Picton had a six-month relationship with Brown as they both worked at the same holiday park.

Police warned him away after the relationship turned sour and he began pestering Picton.

The court was told how he started drinking heavily and began to pester her, knocking on her door and bombarding her with "repeated, unwelcome texts" for ten months.

The mobile home was damaged so badly after the incident it had to be scrapped.

Brown admitted damaging property and to slashing all the tyres on her Citroën Nemo.

Judge Graham Cottle said Brown, of St Agnes, was a "danger to any woman he has a relationship with". The thug, who had previous convictions for domestic violence, was jailed for six years and given a four-year extension period, meaning he will remain on licence for four further years after his release.

A Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) spokesman said: "Due to the circumstances under which these crimes were committed, the CPS flagged them as domestic violence and the judge uplifted the sentence from six years to ten to reflect this."

Dorset crime commissioner has car broken intoMatt Morton/PA

In one of the more ironic stories in the news, the first police and crime commissioner for Dorset has had his car broken into and his GPS device stolen while attending a conference on crime in the area.

The window of Martyn Underhill's police car was forcefully opened and thieves helped themselves to a sat-nav system mounted to the windscreen while he attended a conference at the Sovereign Centre in Boscombe, Bournemouth.
Mr Underhill said: "We all know Boscombe does have a crime issue. The irony of this incident has not been lost on me."

He had been in a meeting for around two hours, discussing proposals to employ a volunteer advocate to back the commissioner in tackling community problems.

Mr Underhill explained: "I accidentally left my driver's window open by one inch, someone forced the window down and grabbed the sat-nav from the windscreen."

He added: "The charger unit was connected, and snapped off in the socket in the centre console, as they pulled the sat-nav out. No actual entry to the car was gained, it was left locked."

The theft was embarrassingly coincidental, occurring just as the local council met to discuss the problem of vehicle crime in the Boscombe area.

"That is why I am employing a voluntary advocate, to help me to work with partners to resolve the issues in Boscombe. This incident also raises awareness of vehicle crime in Dorset," said Underhill.

Look on the bright side, at least Mr Underhill wasn't driving a 690bhp Lamborghini Aventador like the police in Dubai.

Florida woman escapes heavy-duty engine falling onto carABC News

A Florida woman is lucky to be alive after an enormous engine fell off a passing lorry directly onto her car.

The woman - whose name has not been released - was driving on Biscayne Boulevard in Miami when an oversized articulated lorry carrying enormous industrial engines attempted to drive underneath a bridge next to her.
The lorry failed to clear the overpass and two of the engines were forced onto the road, with one landing directly onto the driver's side of the woman's Honda Accord.

The Accord attempted to avoid the falling engine by swerving but failed, and to make matters worse, crashed into the car in front.

Even though the engine fell onto the driver's side of the Honda, the driver was not injured. "I don't know how it happened," police officer Kenia Reyes told ABCNews.com. "She miraculously survived."

Miami police believe the secret to the driver's survival was down to her quick thinking as she slid across to the passenger seat just before the giant engine struck the car.

The truck driver also escaped with no injuries, as did the driver of the car rear-ended by the Honda Accord.

Authorities have not yet said whether the lorry driver, whose name was also not released, will face any charges.

Local news website WPLG reported there are no clearance warning signs posted on either side of the overpass.

Ford faces recall woesFord

Japanese car manufacturers are currently battling one of the largest recalls of this year, with 3.4 million cars affected globally, but they aren't the only ones putting out PR fires.

Ford recently announced that some 16,312 Transit vans are being recalled due to a faulty 'R' clip that retains the brake pedal.
There is a possibility the clip can become detached, resulting in the disconnection of the brake pedal and brake failure.

The Ford Transit and Transit Custom vehicles affected were assembled in the Southampton and Kocaeli plants between 8th Oct 12 (Southampton 28th Sept 2012) and 6th Feb 13.

A Ford spokesperson said: "The safety and comfort of our customers are always top priorities at Ford Motor Company.

"For their peace of mind and convenience, we have initiated a Safety Recall to correct a potential product concern on certain Ford Transit and Transit Custom vehicles."

Transit owners shouldn't be overly concerned as Ford assures us that "no accidents or injuries related to this concern have been reported. To our knowledge no customers have experienced this failure."

Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by Ford and asked to visit local dealers where a replacement part will be fitted quickly and for free.

VIN numbers affected are WF0KXXTTPKBS86741 to WF0UXXTTPUBU75804.
