Eighteen months, thousands of pounds and countless man-hours of effort brought this classic Lincoln Town Car up to show standards -- only for it to be destroyed in a matter of seconds.

Having bought the American cruiser from a fellow car enthusiast as wreck with no wheels for £500, Chris Downes fitted a new suspension, hydraulics and a complete new gearbox to get the car back on the road.
Leaving his pride and joy parked on a quiet residential street outside his home in Nottingham, a Peugeot crashed into a lamppost that then toppled on top of the car, crushing it flat on Monday.

Chris told the This is Nottingham website: "I spent over a year working on the car's suspension and put in a whole new gearbox and hydraulics. When I got it, it had no wheels and needed a complete overhaul, so I did all that. I would say I have spent around £7,000."

The IT technician added: "I just can't believe it. I'm gutted."

A spokesman for Nottingham police said they were investigating the crash, which happened at around 11.30am on Monday.

Chris is now relying on his insurance to cover the cost of the car. He said: "For people who know about these cars, they are very special and it's a real shame.

"This isn't a dangerous road and this sort of thing has never happened here before."
