Following hot on the heels of the cooking spec CLA shown at Detroit in January, this AMG range-topper was unveiled this week at the New York Motor Show.
Unlike the rest of its AMG brethren, the CLA 45 eschews a large-displacement V8 for a considerably more efficient 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder motor.
Those looking for serious performance shouldn't be put off by the downsizing, though. The CLA 45 develops a healthy 355bhp and 450Nm of torque, deployed though a seven-speed twin clutch gearbox and Mercedes' AMG 4MATIC all-wheel drive system.
Such power is enough to get the CLA 45 from 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds and on to a top speed of 155mph - serious credentials for a junior member of the AMG brand.
The already striking looks of the CLA have been given a steroidal makeover to reflect the CLA 45's sporting intent. It wears AMG's current signature "twin-blade" radiator grille, which is flanked by enlarged air intakes.
The rear valance is enlarged and incorporates air ducts on either side, lending the car a chunky, broad stance. Unique alloy wheels complete the makeover.
The interior is similarly styled, with red detailing, a racecar-inspired quartic steering wheel and brushed aluminium trim. We can't help but think the scarlet seat belts are a touch too far, however.
The Mercedes CLA 45 AMG will arrive in UK showrooms this Autumn. Price and specification details are yet to be confirmed.
