Developed at the secretive Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire, and in conjunction with a number of leading technology companies, the Astra exceeds ACPO's directive that a future police car should be a mobile office, so bobbies can spend more time on the beat rather than filling out paperwork at the station.
Fitted with no less than three separate computers, the Astra Sports Tourer has the ability to process forensics and recognise the faces of ne'er-do-wells thanks to cameras covering both the interior and exterior of the vehicle.
With high-speed broadband and docks for Toughbook laptops and rugged smartphones, the car allows officers to download or stream video such as CCTV footage on the move, as well as upload media to a central crime database.
Spookily, the car can also predict future crime spots through its complex on-board software.
The Astra is also fitted with a black box that monitors, amongst other things, the car's speed, location and miles per gallon.
It has taken pride of place at the Police and Security conference in Farnborough. Vauxhall also took the honours at last year's event, with its Ampera extended range electric vehicle.
The Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer is British built, being produced at the company's Ellesmere Port facility.
